My personal experience with chronic pain and multiple visits to physical therapists and chiropractors led me to question why I couldn't effectively manage my symptoms despite years of treatment. The pandemic further emphasized the need for a solution. I recognized the importance of forming long-term habits to minimize and prevent recurring pain but understood that it's a challenge for many. Consequently, I set out to design a product aimed at assisting people dealing with low to moderate chronic pain.

I created an insight flow map to keep track of users’ voices while evolving them into key insights. This way, I could focus on users’ needs without being sidetracked.

What users need from their workout products to get to their goals of a healthy body without chronic pain is narrowed down to 3 main categories: personalization, mind & body, and motivator.

Holistic Experience

Holistic Experience

Numerous studies affirm the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for pain relief, particularly in self-directed forms like meditation. Meditation not only aids pain relief but also enhances overall mental health. With this knowledge, I designed "Poise" as a hybrid exercise product, integrating meditation and essential mental health guidance.

80% of user interview participants mentioned pain points related to workout video content, including repeated introductions, unwanted background music, and annoying instruction voices. I aimed to address these concerns by designing customizable products that maintain simplicity that can lead users to enjoy every customized session and ultimately help them form habits.

I aimed to address these concerns by designing customizable products that maintain simplicity that can lead users to enjoy every customized session and ultimately help them form habits.

User interviews revealed that users had to endure unwanted exercises in pre-made non-edited programs, causing frustration and boredom. To address this, I designed customizable features that empower users to edit or create workouts tailored to their needs, preferences, and schedules.

User interviews uncovered a strong desire to save favorite exercise programs for quick access, so that they don’t lose momentum. To address this need, I created a "Poise" playlists page, allowing users to save both pre-made and edited classes.

**Future iterations will include the ability to publish and share user-generated playlists with others, so that users can communicate and motivate each other by exercising each other’s playlists, although this feature is not included in the initial MVP.

Reflection

Don’t consider yourself as a user

Don’t consider yourself as a user

Don’t consider yourself as a user

I was surprised many of my confident assumptions were not correct after I spent a lot of time in my quantitative and qualitative research phases to understand users’ pain points and what they want to devise a realistic solution that could work for everyone who wants to improve their issues. After several rounds of interviews and usability tests with users, I learned how different the priorities are for everyone including myself and that a solution isn’t always a one size fits all situation. I learned the most important lesson from my very first project that “always listen to users and get insights and facts from testing.
